Sourland Education and Exhibit Center
A Joint Venture between the Sourland Conservancy and the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum
SSAAM and the Sourland Conservancy received a New Jersey Historic Trust Grant to develop a Master Site Plan for the Sourland Education & Exhibit Center. This Center, which will be located adjacent to the historic-register listed Mt. Zion AME Church on Hollow Road in Skillman, will enable our organizations to better achieve our missions by providing space for educational programs, history and art exhibitions, lectures and performances, and offices. We have hired Mills & Schnoering Architects, LLC of Princeton, NJ to create the Plan. The following identifies some specific elements that would be reviewed for incorporation into a Master Plan for the site. There may be additional items that come out of the program sessions:
• Parking and drop-off
• Pedestrian connections, including site signage
• Office space
• Landscape features, including outdoor assembly, new landscape, vegetable and medicinal gardens, and rain garden
• Museum/artifact display
• Shared visitor facilities for the Conservancy and SSAAM
• Appropriate public and private bathrooms and sanitary facilities
• Environmental Center for Sourland Conservancy
