This year's Somerset County Weekend through the Past occurred Saturday, October 12,  and Sunday, October 13, 2019. The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum participated, and it was a fantastic event; click here for event details!

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum tells the story of the unique culture, experiences, and contributions of the African American community of the Sourland Mountain Region of central New Jersey.

Our new website, developed in 2018, has much to offer. It communicates and promotes the mission and goals of the organization, through various online resources. Utilizing the website, you can:

  • Discover the origins and development of the organization, and the restoration of the Mt. Zion AME Church on Hollow Rd. in Montgomery, NJ, future home of the museum.

  • Learn about the history of African Americans in this region, and Sourland Mountain, the unique landscape they called home for centuries.

  • Explore our online resources, which include features relevant to the African American experience: current events, publications and public events, articles on travel and history, and more.

  • Learn about SSAAM related events, past and future, including our outreach work for local schools, gospel brunches, and camp meetings.

Please explore and enjoy our website. Your journey through the African American history of Sourland Mountain and beyond begins here!
